How to identify your Ideal Clients - using Social Media

One of the most important steps in your coaching business is to identify your ideal client. And not only that, you also must need to understand them, know exactly what they think and feel.

You have access to the whole world through Social Media - and there is probably not one single topic that hasn't already been discussed.

And if it hasn't already been discussed, it's probably a very good reason for that. I’m thinking in terms of;

where there is competition there is also opportunity

The more you know about your target audience, the easier it will be to create and market your services to them.

When you speak their language, they will think that you truly know them and their needs.

It also doesn’t need to be so complicated to figure it all out. But it does take some effort.

There are different ways that you can learn about your Ideal Clients (or Avatar as many Business Mentors also call them).

Interviews and Surveys are both effective, and you get to really connect with your audience. But in addition to that, don’t forget about all the information that already exists on social media.

Let me take you through my favorite ones, and how you can leverage the information you find there.

Step 1: Create Your Central Ideal Client Depository

But BEFORE you start searching the Internet, or talking to people. You need to create a central documentation where you keep ALL the information that you collect about your Ideal Client. By having a central depository, you will save yourself so much time going forward.

Step 2: Research in Facebook Groups

Join Facebook Groups that seem to cover topics that are related to your line of business e.g. Entrepreneurs, Yoga Teachers, Mindfulness etc.

Use the "search" section and search for keywords that are related to your topic.

Read the posts and comments that come up based on your keyword search and copy paste the RELEVANT information into your Central Ideal Client Document.

In all of these researches, make sure you copy the EXACT wording that your Ideal Clients have used to your document.

By using the same wording and language that they are using - you speak the same language as them. Remember that even if your service will help solve a problem that the old you would have needed, you have since then progressed.

You are now an expert.
You are no longer the novice.

You have learnt a whole new vocabulary since you started your journey, that you most likely didn’t know before.

Step 3: Research on LinkedIn

Groups are not as informative, and they might be completely outdated, on LinkedIn. But what you can do to learn more about your Ideal Client is to create a poll on your own LinkedIn profile.

However, as these polls require predefined questions, the answers you'll get will not be as conclusive as when you create a complete survey with open questions.

Step 4: Research on Instagram

Search for #s and profiles that relate to your topic of interest. Read the posts and comments that come up and transfer the exact (relevant) comments to your Central Ideal Client Document.

While you're at it - why don’t you follow 5 new accounts, like 4 of each of their posts and comment on 2 of each of their posts. We’re killing two birds with one stone here.

Step 5: Research on YouTube

Search for influencers that share information about your topic. Choose videos with a high number of viewers and check out the comments. What is it that their audience wants to know?

Again, transfer the exact wording of the relevant comments to your Central Ideal Client Document.

Step 6: Research Summary & Conclusion

Review the information you collected and identify the problems, thoughts, or concerns that seem to pop up more regularly.

THAT is where the GOLD is.

THAT is what your Ideal Clients need SUPPORT with.

THAT is what you need to SOLVE through your services.

AND, since you now also have a document full of the exact language that your Ideal Clients are using, you can reach out to them, sharing what you’ve learnt, and offering your services.

All the time you’ll be using their words.

And that is how you get to know your Ideal Clients, and how you get them to think that you know them and how they feel.

Because now you do.
